Tub and Shower Maintenance Tips

A shower head runs waterA nice bathroom can make the difference between a cozy home and place that you’d rather not spend time in. A bathroom should be a place of solace and a place where you can feel clean. If this isn’t accomplished, then the function of the room is not met. One of the big touchstones of every bathroom is the bathtub/shower. Here are some tips to keep your bathtub and shower looking sharp and maintained…

Clean hard water stains

No matter what you do, hard water stains are eventually going to work their way onto parts of your shower and bathtub. That’s simply the nature of having a receptacle that is supposed to have lots of water run along it. However, hard water stains can drive down the visual appeal of a bathroom, and even impact the value of a home. For this reason, keeping hard water stains at bay should be a goal of every homeowner. To do this, clean your tub/shower regularly and use hot water and liquid cleaner that is nonabrasive, at least for the floor in the tub.

Use materials that can take moisture

If you are building or replacing a section of your bathtub, then it is essential to use building materials that you know are going to be able to handle the moisture buildup in the tub/shower. Traditionally, tile and grout are good options for this goal. However, mold and mildew can grow between the tile if you do not clean regularly.

Ensure that the whole thing is sealed

Again, running water is obviously going to be an aspect of your tub and shower that you want to plan for. This means that you should take extra care to make sure that the entire fixture is professionally caulked and sealed, to prevent moisture from leaking into the walls and causing water damage. Moisture can lead to mold and mildew that will completely ruin a wall in a matter of months, if it is left unchecked.

Use a curtain or a door

Install a curtain or a door onto the shower. The reason for this is quite obvious, as not doing so can lead to water continuously getting on the floor and building up, which will wear away at your bathroom floor at a much faster rate than it otherwise would. On top of that, it is just very uncomfortable to have a wet bathroom floor.
