Salt Lake City, UT
Salt Lake City is the capital and most populated city of Salt Lake County in the state of Utah. The population was about 190,884 in 2014, but the metropolitan area had an estimate of 1,153,340. The cities that stretch along the Wasatch Front from Salt Lake to Provo contain approximately 2,423,912 residents. It continues to expand and the population is supposed to double in the next 20 years.
The headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day is located downtown. In 1847 the city was founded by church followers who were seeking refuge from the persecution they had previously encountered to the east. They would eventually be called the Mormon pioneers. At first, when they arrived in the Salt Lake valley they encountered a very inhabitable landscape. They began to extensively cultivate and irrigate then land and then were able to form the ground to sustain the population. The city’s road grid was built around the Salt Lake Temple and the streets run North-South-East and West.
Due to the city’s closeness to the Great Salt Lake, it was originally named after it. The word “Great” was eventually dropped from the city’s name. The arrival of more church members, the mining boom, and the first railroad brought huge economic growth to the area. The city eventually received the nickname “the Crossroads of the West.”
