Most of us here in Utah don’t often worry about droughts. However, outside of California, Salt Lake may be the city at the highest risk for drought in the U.S.
Utah is the 2nd driest state in the nation, and yet we’re one of the highest consumers of water per capita! With a growing population, our natural resources are being stretched, and it’s everyone’s responsibility to help conserve.
The good news is that water conservation doesn’t take much work. All it takes is a few good habits, and a few changes around the house. Give it a try!
1: Turn off the tap!
It’s so simple, and yet how many of us persist in letting the water run as we brush our teeth? If you’re letting the water run while you brush your teeth, you’re wasting up to 8 gallons per day. And that’s just while brushing teeth! Remember to also turn off the tap while shaving, while lathering hands, and while washing dishes or fruit. In some cases, stopping the drain or using a small tub in the sink will help you rinse just as effectively with less water.
2: Use less water with each flush
New toilets use significantly less water. However, if you’re not ready to get a completely new toilet, you can reduce each flush’s water usage with a simple trick: Put a bottle full of water or sand in the toilet tank. It won’t change the way your toilet works, and it can save up to 10 gallons a day.
3: Install low-flow faucets and shower heads
Not only will it give your kitchen and bathroom a shiny new spruce-up, you’ll save water without even noticing the difference! Modern low-flow shower heads and faucets maintain the same level of pressure while using about half the water.
4: Stop up the leaks
A single dripping faucet can lose four gallons of water per day. That’s money literally down the drain! Leaks can happen elsewhere, too, from your pipes to your drainage. Leaks cause damage and impede the functionality of your waterworks.
Some leaks happen in places that you’ll never see with the naked eye. A sudden spike in your water bill might signal an invisible problem. Call us if you have problems with leaks in your home.
