Sprinklers Tips

Sprinkler watering flower bush

In Utah, a nice, green lawn is a key sign of responsible home ownership. However, keeping your home’s grass lively and lush takes water, and a significant amount of it. Sprinkler systems are an incredibly common amenity for homes in the Western United States, for this very reason.

Steps to Installing a Sprinkler System

Sprinkler systems take a good amount of knowledge and work to install. If you are thinking of applying a new sprinkler system to your own yard, here are some of the steps to do so:

Create a map: First of all, you need to thoroughly map out where each pipe is going to run, and where each head is going to be placed to most effectively water your entire yard. It’s important to be precise with your measurements, and to thoroughly think through where each pipe needs to be laid.

Tap into water line: Ideally, your home will already have a spigot that you can use to draw water into your sprinkler system. Connecting into that water line and installing an anti-siphon valve are needed to move forward with the rest of your system’s installation.

Make trenches: An ideal sprinkler trench should be at least a half-foot deep, and needs to run across the exact pipe path drawn out in your map. The easiest way to do this is to rent a ditcher (or digging wheel) that will dig the exact specifications you need.

Place valve manifold: A valve manifold regulates the amount of water that goes to each section of the sprinkler system. One pipe needs to run directly from the main water line to the valve manifold. The manifold should be placed in a spot that is easy to get to, for maintenance purposes.

Lay PVC pipe: Once the manifold is in, you need to lay PVC pipe throughout the rest of your trenches. Typically, ¾ inch pipe is preferred for sprinkler systems. At each connection of pipe, use waterproof adhesive to prevent leaks in the future.

Install heads: Once your PVC pipe is laid, install the sprinkler heads at each place that you planned in your map. Make sure that you get the appropriate sprinkler head that you need to cover the area that you planned for.
