Holladay, UT
The area now known as Holladay was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847. With numerous springs, streams, and ponds, grasses and wildflowers were abundant, which made the area very desirable for settlement. Over 100 years later, Cottonwood Mall was constructed in the Holladay area and was the first enclosed shopping mall in Utah. The city was named after one of the early settlers, John Holladay. There was continual growth over the years due to the great conditions for agriculture, orchards, and businesses.
The city was incorporated on November 29, 1999, as Holladay-Cottonwood, and the name was shortened to Holladay on December 14 of that year. By then, incorporation was overwhelmingly supported by the city’s residents. They had a great desire to control local planning and zoning. Similarly, the majority of residents attending the meeting wanted to maintain its rural atmosphere as well as additional improvements. Some of the things the community wanted and suggested were pedestrian friendly business areas with walking and biking trails throughout the community. To increase the beauty of the city, they asked for landscaping to be required in large parking areas. More importantly, help preserve current vegetation and trees as well as add more wherever possible. Because of the persistence and care of the community, Holladay has blossomed to be a beautiful quiet desirable place to live work and play.
