Millcreek, Utah
The newest city in Utah. Millcreek, Utah was settled in 1848. The area remained a more rural area until after World War II. Growth started after the war and the city began to spill over the Salt Lake City limits, but the area was still not ready to be incorporated at that time. During the 1980’s Millcreek continued to grow and was known by many different names including canyon Rim, Mount Olympus, and East Millcreek. Salt Lake City established it as a township in 2002 and was created to give residents more local control with planning and annexation prevention from surrounding cities. At this time Millcreek was the most populated unincorporated area in Salt Lake County.
In 2012 residents tried to put the matter on the ballot but only 40% voted to have the area incorporated. Even though the initiative failed in 2012, the matter was put on the ballot again in 2015. Residents voted for incorporation in 2016 including voting for a mayor and city council members. Finally, Millcreek was a city of its own. Suburban in character, Millcreek is wedged between Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake on the north and Murray and Holladay on the south.
