A clogged shower drain or kitchen drain is a very frustrating experience. If it is exceptionally bad, you may even have to call a plumber out to fix your drain. Unfortunately, plumbers are not always available the moment you call them due to prior commitments, holidays, or if you call at strange hours. At Electric Rooter, we are typically available to assist within the hour, and are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. While clearing clogged drains is possible, it is better to prevent clogs in the first place. Read on for 3 easy tips to help you keep your drains clear.

Be Careful What You Put Down the Drain
Never pour cooking grease down your sink, as it can and will clog your drain as it cools. Wipe down pots and pans with a paper towel and freeze bacon grease and use it to grease cooking tins or use as an oil substitute. Flour is also something to avoid – as it will harden when it dries and clog your pipes. Don’t flush paper towels, cotton balls, wipes, etc. down your toilet as they do not break down in a septic tank. Use your garbage can or toss them into your compost pile instead. Be careful not to send too much toilet paper down the drain all at once, as the toilet can only handle so much at a time.

Get a Debris Catcher
Instead of sending everything down your drain, purchase a mesh catcher or basket to catch hair, food, and other debris. There are different sizes for every drain, so get one for your kitchen sink, bathtub, bathroom sink, etc. There are two different kinds, one that sits on top of the drain (typically suctions to the tub around the drain), and one that slips into the drain itself. The second kind is the most effective, but you will have to remove the stopper in order to install it.

Clean Your Drain Monthly
Once a month, flush the drain to help keep it clear. You can use a chemical such as bleach, or use baking soda and vinegar if you prefer the natural route. Pour your cleaner of choice down the drain before going to bed, and then flush it with a large pot of hot water the next morning. You should also rinse the drain with hot water after every use to prevent oils from building up and clogging your drain.
