3 Home Renovations That Will Save Water

We’re all worried about water conservation. With such a warm winter, especially, the ground didn’t receive as much moisture and water as it needed. That means that we may be in for a really dry and hot summer. While a nicely warm summer may sound pleasant, it isn’t as nice as it seems. With hotter temperatures we’re more at risk for forest fires, as well as other damages to the environment caused by too hot of an atmosphere. It’s not up to any one person to conserve water this year, but impending drought or not, it’s probably a good idea to try and save water this spring and summer! Here are a few home renovations that will not only save water, but they’ll save you money!

    Repair leaking faucets and pipes

This is one of the biggest culprits to wasting water. If you have a leak, it will leak gallons of water in a very short period of time, often without you even noticing or knowing. Getting these leaks fixed will lower your water and utility bills significantly, and the best part is that there’s no need for you to attempt to conserve more water consciously. But you’ll be saving tons of both money and water by simply getting your leaky faucets and pipes repaired.

    Install a rain barrel

We know it hasn’t been raining a lot this season, but installing a rain barrel will help you do the most with what rain water we do receive this year. It’s simple and inexpensive, but a rain barrel installed under your lawn or roof will collect runoff water that you can reuse later.

    Use a drip irrigation system

A better alternative to a sprinkler system, is a drip irrigation system. A drip system will apply a small amount of water throughout your lawn in a uniform fashion. It is also a much more accurate system that sprinklers are, so your water will be much more effective, and you won’t have to use nearly as much water to maintain and take care of your lawn and garden.

If a drip irrigation system isn’t something you’re ready to switch over to, consider setting up your current sprinkler system with a timer system. This way your sprinklers aren’t running too long, and you can time it to water your lawn at optimum times so you don’t waste as much water.
